Classical

“Classicism invokes those characteristics normally associated with the art of antiquity—harmony, clarity, restraint, universality, and idealism. Because of the high regard accorded to ancient art, “classic” is sometimes used to mean that the example is the best of its type.” - Encyclopedia Britannica

Bharatanatyam is one of the most established classical dance forms in India, originating in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu. Accompanied by South Indian (Carnatic) classical music, Bharatanatyam is renowned for its grace, agility, intricate footwork and emotive depth.

As an artist, I believe that Classicism is much broader than Ancient Greek texts or Mozart string quartets, and encompasses a borderless and timeless aesthetic that allows us to experience the lives we have lived, the beauty we feel, and the love we dream of.

Rooted in the eternal perfection of humanity, with all its flaws, fears and illusions we can bathe in the music, poetry and dance of our pasts, and bring them to life in the present with immediacy and relevance, awakening our minds, hearts and souls.

Bharatanatyam has offered me the privilege of being a part of a rich history and legacy that now allows me to show the inherent evolution of the art form in my classical practice.
